Rehabilitation & Therapy

Hydrotherapy is available for pre and post operative clients to build and condition supporting muscles. Swimming prior to surgery builds muscle mass and greatly reduces recovery time. After surgery, when
exercise on land is limited, swimming can provide the much needed low impact workout.

Therapy
For conditions such as arthritis and hip-dysphasia, swimming provides weightless exercise to improve joint movement, increase circulation and build supporting muscle, where walking on hard ground can be uncomfortable and cause lameness.

Conditioning
If your dog is overweight or exercise is painful, swimming can be a healthy alternative to maintain your dog’s activity level. It can be difficult to exercise a dog on land without over stressing the bones and joints.
Swimming puts your dog in a weightless environment and this low impact exercise is easy on the joints which can make a difference. It is great for maintaining cardiovascular health or to help shave off those extra pounds.

How Does It Work?
All therapy is performed at your doctor’s prescription or our doctor’s evaluation. For a non-pre or post operative treatment, a program can be designed for your pet by our Certified Canine Physical Therapist and Massage Therapist.

Initially, your dog is introduced to our pool wearing a flotation device that helps the dog get acclimated to the water. Once your dog has the hang of it, future sessions can be harness free. It is your choice. As with any fitness program, you should expect to start gently and increase the exercise over time. At first, your dog may only swim for a few minutes or a few short bursts. Gradually, as their fitness improves, they will be able to swim longer with fewer rests. Sessions are 30 minutes in length and what you do in that 30 minutes is up to you- walking on the underwater treadmill or lap swimming.

Programs
Please call for a recommendation for the swimming package that best suits you and your dog. In addition, swim times can be scheduled while your dog is in daycare or boarding at Yappie Cuttery.

Hydrotherapy
It’s amazing what the healing powers of water can do. Many animals have success with a pre or post-operative therapy program including 30 minute session swimming or walking on an underwater treadmill. This low impact workout can be just what your pet needs to ease back into life as normal.
